 HICCUPS:

Hiccups means involuntary, uncontrolled contractions of diaphragm muscle. Usually hiccups resolve on there own within few minutes,they do not implies any underlying diseases or anything however if hiccups persist more than 48 hour it is called as chronic hiccups

Causes of hiccups:

Causes of hiccups lasting less than 48 hour or few minutes

1.Drinking carbonated beverage

2.Having excess meal, eating too quickly

3.Emotional stress

4.Excitement

5.Swallowing air while eating chewing gums

6.Sudden change in temperature

7.Drinking excess alcohol

When hiccups persist more than 48 hour and interfere with eating, sleep than it's time to consult your doctor

Causes of chronic hiccups

1.Metabolic diseases 

Alcoholism,Anesthesia,diabetes, kidney disease, Electrolyte imbalance

2.Drugs like

Steriods, barbiturate, tranquilizer

3.Nerve irritation

Goiter, Gastroesopheageal reflux, sore throat, laryngitis

4.Central nervous system disorder

Encephalitis, meningitis, multiple sclerosis, stroke, traumatic brain injury

You are more susceptible for hiccups if

1.You are male

2.You have anxiety

3.History of abdominal surgery

4.Have received general anaesthesia during surgery

How to get rid of hiccups

Home remedies to get rid of hiccups

1.Holding breath or breathing into paper bag this both causes rise in Co2 into lungs which relaxes contracting diaphragm

2.Drinking a glass of water quickly

3.Pulling hard on your tongue

4.Breathing smelling salts

5.Biting on lemon

6.Gargling with water

7.Bring your knees to your chest and maintain this position

8.Valsalva maneuver that is shutting your mouth and nose and exhaling forcibly

Chronic hiccups:

Its should be treated by doctor, doctor may attempt Gastric lavage, Carotid sinus massage etc. Your doctor can do following tests

1.Blood test for diabetes, kidney disease

2.Liver function test

3.Chest xray, MRI

4.Endoscopy

5.Bronchoscopy

Drugs that can be use to treat hiccups only by prescription of doctor are

1.Chlorpromazine, haloperidol

2.Benzodiazepine

3.Benadryl

4.Nifedipine

5.Gabapentin

6.Metoclopramide
